Projet Sape // Kinshasa // 2006-2009

Ce projet n’aurait pas été possible sans une longue amitié avec des amis et artistes vivant à Kinshasa : Djanga Weni, Androa Mindre Kolo, Ken’s Mukendi, Vieux Daouda, Dicoco Bokhetsu, et bien d’autres dont les ‘sapeurs’.

Je travaille à Kinshasa, RDC depuis 2001. Très tôt, là-bas, j’ai rencontré la sape. Il existe de nombreuses façons de décrire la sape. Peu, cependant peuvent saisir son intense complexité et aucun ne peut prétendre l’« expliquer ». C’est un phénomène beaucoup trop riche et mouvant. Au sens large, donc – et forcément trop large – une définition : ce dont je parle ici, c’est d’un ensemble de pratiques impliquant des jeunes hommes et femmes qui s’articule autour des croisements entre mode de rue, haute couture, performance et « habillage ». This project wouldn’t have been made possible without a long term companionship with friends and artists living in Kinshasa: Djanga Weni, Androa Mindre Kolo, Ken’s Mukendi, Vieux Daouda, Dicoco Bokhetsu, and many others including the ‘sapeurs’.

I have been working in Kinshasa, DRC since 2001. Early on, there, I encountered sape. There are many ways to describe sape. Few, however, can effectively capture its intense complexity and none can claim to « explain » it. It is far too rich and shifting a phenomenon for such. Broadly, then – and of necessity too broadly – a definition: what I speak of here is a set of practices involving young men and women that revolves around intersections between street fashion, haute couture, performance and « dressing up ».
