By Night est un événement d’une nuit organisé par Courants d’Art [Nathalie Gonthier], le 14 septembre 2013 au centre-ville de St Denis de la Réunion. Ce projet [citant Daniel Buren] interroge le rapport des hommes à l’histoire et particulièrement aux monuments publics – ici lié à la première guerre mondiale. Le projet déplace la relation spatiale que nous avons habituellement avec une statue, en général verticale et très haute, vers une relation horizontale de proximité. L’idée première était de construire un escalier devant l’ange qui se trouve en haut de la colonne au milieu de la rue principale à côté de la mairie de St Denis de la Réunion, mais c’était techniquement impossible. L’idée est donc venue d’une nacelle élévatrice. Pendant tout l’événement, tout le monde pouvait aller voir l’ange.

By Night is a one night event organized by Courants d’Art [Nathalie Gonthier], the 14th of september 2013 downtown St Denis de la Réunion. This project [quoting Daniel Buren] questions the relation people have with history and particularly with public monuments – here related to the first world war. The project shifts the spatial relation we usually have with a statue, in general vertical and far up, to an horizontal relation of proximity. The first idea was to build a stair in front of the angel which is at the top of the column in the middle of the main street next to the St Denis de la Réunion city hall, but it was impossible technically. So the idea came of a cherry picker. During the all event anyone could go and see the angel.
