Le bas de la rivière // St Denis de la Réunion, 2013
This series focuses on the production of the common via the interactions between people and the presence of nature in the city space. It begins with a walk in ‘Le bas de la rivière’, a popular area along the St Denis river, just next to the city center of St Denis de la Réunion. La Réunion island has a particular relation with urbanity. It was discovered and began to be inhabited very late (XVIIth century), and stayed almost un-urbanized until the fifties. The nature is extremely powerful and this intensity constantly visible in the island, including cities. ‘Le bas de la rivière’ singular urbanity questions what we call ‘the urban’. The area goes along the river, it begins on the beach, goes through social housing and industries, and ends in a canyon deep in the mountain, on the way to Mafate circus. Even in the canyon, for people we are obviously in the city.
This series was exhibited in urban space, downtown St Denis de la Réunion during By Night, an event organized by Courants D’art (Nathalie Gonthier), the 14th of sept 2013.
